Do you pay taxes on crypto?

Last reviewed:

Yes, in the U.S. crypto can be taxed. The IRS treats it as property. Selling crypto, trading one coin for another or spending it can create a capital gain or loss. Being paid in crypto, or earning rewards, usually counts as income. Simply buying crypto with dollars and holding it is not usually a taxable event by itself.
